How do I know if my house has an RCD?

What is an RCD and why does my house need one?

An RCD is a safety switch that protects against electrical accidents by monitoring the difference between current going out and coming back in an electrical circuit. When this difference exceeds 30 milliamps, it automatically cuts off the current within 0.04 seconds, preventing dangerous electric shocks that can be fatal.

According to Swedish electrical installation regulations (SS-EN 61008), earth leakage switches are mandatory in all homes built after 1994. They mainly protect against indirect contact with live parts, for example when an electrical appliance fails and the metal casing becomes live. Without an RCD, such faults can lead to serious electrical accidents or fires.

Where can I find the RCD in my house?

In older houses that have been upgraded, the RCD may be located in different ways. Sometimes it is located as a separate unit mounted next to the original switchboard, or the entire switchboard has been replaced and the RCD integrated into the new installation. Some properties have several RCDs for different circuits.

How do I test if my RCD is working properly?

Test the RCD by pressing the test button - it should immediately trip and all power in the house will be lost. If nothing happens when you press the test button, the RCD will not work and must be replaced by an electrician. This is a simple but important safety test that you should do regularly.

Follow these steps for safe testing:

  1. Warn everyone in the house that the power will go out temporarily
  3. Check that all power has been lost throughout the house
  5. Check that the power has returned normally

Test the RCD at least once a month for optimal safety. If it does not respond to the test pressure, trips too often, or cannot be turned back on after testing, contact an electrician immediately. A defective RCD provides no protection against electrical accidents.

What if my house has no earth leakage circuit breaker?

Houses without earth leakage protection have a significantly higher risk of serious electrical accidents and fires. Without this protection, faulty electrical appliances, worn electrical cables or moisture damage can create dangerous situations where metal objects become live without blowing fuses. This can lead to fatal electric shocks if touched.

According to current Swedish electrical regulations, earth leakage switches must be installed at:

  • All major electrical works in existing buildings
  • Replacement of switchboard or main fuses
  • Installation of new electrical outlets in wet rooms
  • Sale of real estate (often required by buyer or bank)
  • Rental apartments where the landlord is responsible for electrical safety

Although older houses are not obliged to upgrade retroactively, the installation of RCDs is strongly recommended for safety. The cost is low compared to the risk of personal injury or property damage. Many insurance companies also require RCDs for full compensation in case of electrical damage.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cost of installing RCDs in an older house?

The cost of installing RCDs varies between SEK 3,000-8,000 depending on the age and complexity of the switchboard. In simpler cases where only a new main switch is needed, the cost is around SEK 3,000-4,500, while older installations that require updating the entire switchboard can cost SEK 6,000-8,000 including materials and labor.

Can I install an RCD myself or do I need to hire an electrician?

Installation of earth leakage circuit breakers must always be carried out by a qualified electrician in accordance with Swedish law. The work requires notification to the Electrical Safety Authority and must be checked by an authorized installer. Working on the switchboard yourself is both illegal and extremely dangerous - even experienced DIYers can have fatal electrical accidents.

Why does my RCD trip so often and what should I do?

Recurrent tripping may be due to moisture in the electrical installation, old electrical appliances with insulation faults, or a defective RCD. First unplug all appliances and turn on the RCD - if it works, the problem is an appliance. If it still trips, there is probably an insulation fault in the installation that requires immediate electrician assistance.

Are there different types of RCDs and which one does my house need?

Yes, there are AC type (most common in older houses) and A type (required in modern installations with electronic appliances). For ordinary households, 30mA sensitivity is sufficient, but wet rooms may require extra sensitive 10mA switches. An electrician will assess which type is suitable for your house based on the age of the installation and types of appliances.

Do RCDs affect my electricity bill or the performance of my appliances?

No, RCDs do not affect electricity consumption or the functioning of appliances during normal operation. They only monitor leakage current and are only activated in case of a fault. However, some sensitive electronic products can cause small leakage currents that can trigger old RCDs - in which case an upgrade to A-type may be needed.

What happens if the RCD trips when I am not at home?

Refrigerators, freezers and other essential appliances lose power until someone turns the RCD back on. For holiday homes or periods of extended absence, you can install smart monitoring that alerts you to power cuts, or ask neighbors/friends to check regularly. Never solve the problem by unplugging the RCD - it completely eliminates your electrical protection.
