Bubbles mean trouble
Is the toilet or sink draining badly, has the drain become blocked? Is the drain bubbling or is water rising from the floor drain? These are a few alarming examples of a blocked drain that require immediate action!
Why do the pipes get blocked?
There are countless reasons why drains clog. Among the most common causes of blockages are foreign objects that do not belong in the sewer. Cotton buds, grease and snuff bags are just a few examples. The age of the drain also affects the likelihood of a blockage. Old cast iron drains tend to rust and when the rust comes off, it can cause a blockage in the drain. Structural defects, such as dents and indentations, can also start to collect material and cause blockages.
What can be done when the pipes are blocked?
Sewer blockages can be prevented. Professionals recommend filming drains at least every 10 years, depending on when the drain was put into service. Old drains should be filmed more often. Filming drains can help identify the causes of blockages and the need for repairs. It is also worth flushing the sewer when it effectively loosens e.g. grease that has accumulated in the sewer. Flushing your drains prevents new blockages from occurring and helps your drains function properly for a longer period of time.
Don't stop and wonder if your drains are blocked. Stop using water altogether and remember to turn off the washing and dishwashers too.
If you live in a detached house and want to try to clear the blockage yourself first, you can try pouring boiling water down the drain. You or your neighbor may also have a sewer spring that can be used, but remember that although you can clear the blockage with the spring, it may be a temporary solution. For example, if there was a stick stuck crosswise in the drain, you can use the drain spring to loosen it, but there is always a risk that the stick will find a new place to get stuck further down and continue to cause a blockage after a while. You can also try to open the blockage by pouring 1-2 dl of food soda down the drain and then the same amount of vinegar. Let the mixture sit overnight and then pour hot water down the drain.
